Rio Ferdinand makes Cristiano Ronaldo claim as Erik ten Hag set Manchester United target

These are your Manchester United morning headlines on Saturday, May 28.

Ferdinand agrees with Man United fans about Ronaldo this season

Rio Ferdinand has agreed with Manchester United fans about Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo finished the season as United's leading scorer with 24 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions. The forward endured his longest goal drought for over a decade across the hectic festive period but he emphatically put an end to that barren run.

The 37-year-old scored 18 of those goals in the Premier League and only Mohamed Salah (23) and Son Heung-Min (23) finished the campaign with more. Ronaldo often single-handedly won United matches with his goals this season.

Despite Ronaldo's contribution, United still finished the campaign with their lowest ever Premier League points total.

Scholes sets clear target for Ten Hag during first season

Paul Scholes admits Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will face a 'major' task to finish in the top-four during his first season in the Premier League.

At the end of a dismal campaign, Ten Hag started work at Old Trafford as he sets about a much-needed rebuild that will, it is hoped, lead to better fortunes on-field. United finished sixth this term and their long wait for silverware has also been extended to five years.

During that same time-frame, the inbound Dutchman won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax as well as two KNVB Cup trophies. Ten Hag clearly has the pedigree to challenge for success, then, but Scholes wants him and United to set a more realistic - and measured - target for the season ahead.

Scholes told Premier League Productions: "It's going to be difficult, it's a massive job, a major job we all know to get closer to Manchester City and Liverpool, even to get closer to Tottenham and Chelsea. I can't believe I'm saying that but you're 13, 14 points off them as well.
