Rio Ferdinand was overcome with emotion after his son publicly voiced his pride at his dad’s proposal to Kate Wright.
Ferdinand, 39, dropped down on one knee to ask the former TOWIE star to marry him while surrounded by his three children on holiday in Abu Dhabi.
The ex-England footballer shared the romantic moment on Instagram and was nearly reduced to tears after his 12-year-old son commented on the post.
“So glad she said yes I am so proud of you dad and Kate love u both so much,” he posted.
Ferdinand shared a screengrab of the touching comment on his Instagram stories alongside the words: “My boy is trying to make his dad all emotional and s*** (sic).”
Ferdinand shares Lorenz, Tate, 10 and seven-year-old Tia with his late wife Rebecca Ellison who died in 2015, aged 34, after a breast cancer battle.
The sportsman said meeting Wright helped him to overcome his grief, saying she had a “positive” effect on his life.
The pair, who started dating in January 2017, announced their engagement on Thursday, with Wright deeming it the “perfect end to our holiday”.
Ferdinand joked that he had no idea how his children managed to refrain from letting slip the secret to Wright ahead of his big moment.
“She said yes,” he posted on Instagram. “How these 3 kids kept it a secret I’ll never know.”
Wright spoke about becoming a step-mum to Ferdinand’s three children earlier this year, revealing that they had been hassling their dad to pop the question.
Speaking on This Morning she said: “They say on a daily basis, ‘When are you giving us a brother and sister? When are you getting married?’ It's lovely how far we’ve come.
“Every day they’ll say, ‘Dad, are you going to do it yet?’ Rio's like, ‘Oh god, I’ve got three kids and Kate, and thinking when are we going to do it’.”
