Rio Ferdinand has highlighted a major England worry for Chelsea duo Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount ahead of the upcoming international break as the pair have a big task on their hands to prove their worth to national team manager Gareth Southgate.
Both the full-back and attacking midfielder have been selected for the upcoming international games games against Italy and Germany respectively. This is despite one slowly still returning to full fitness after a long injury lay off in 2021/22 whilst the other has been in relatively poor form in recent times. With a new manager in place in the form of Graham Potter, both players now have chances to make their stake to be part of the long-term plans but whilst the former Brighton manager tinkers with team selections in order to try and find the best solution, both players are set to see their game time fluctuate during the season.
Thankfully enough, it seems as though it will be too late for any of the four Chelsea contingent for the Three Lions to miss out on the FIFA World Cup squad ahead of the kick-off in late November but never say never, if Potter was to bench any of the four in upcoming games, their place in the England squad could be in disrepute. Ben White and Jadon Sancho, despite playing consistently for Arsenal and Man United, both missed out on the squad as fans of both clubs were outraged. Therefore, no one is safe and both Chilwell and Mount could have their places up for grabs if they weren't to either gain their fitness quick enough or in Mount's case, if his underwhelming start to the new season continues.

This is something Ferdinand highlighted before Wolves vs Man City with continuity in selection and trust important in this situation with a big tournament just around the corner. He said on BT Sport: "You gain trust through performance. This England team have gone and done things that our generation never got near doing and that counts for something. I understand the odd player coming in when they haven’t been playing at club level, but when you’ve got more than the one. I’d look at it as a player, I’d be concerned.
"I’ve been in squads where players have come in and haven’t played for long periods and haven’t hit the form as they’re used too. I’m thinking, I hope you get more minutes by the time the World Cup comes because I don’t want you coming in rusty, I want you ready to play and in motion with momentum, which is key,."
