Rio Ferdinand explains why he is disappointed Man City were knocked out of the Champions League

Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has explained why he is disappointed that Manchester City did not progress to the Champions League final on Wednesday.

City looked to have been on their way to Paris when Riyad Mahrez made it 5-3 on aggregate with less than 20 minutes remaining. However, heroics from substitute Rodrygo in stoppage time meant extra time would be needed to separate the two sides.

Five minutes into the first period of extra time, Ruben Dias brought down Karim Benzema in the penalty area to give the hosts the chance to complete the turnaround. The Frenchman dusted himself off to slot the ball home from 12 yards to ensure it will be Real who face Liverpool in Paris at the end of the month.

Surprisingly during the post-match analysis of Wednesday's match, Ferdinand expressed his disappointment that City lost. The ex-United man explained on BT Sport: "I think after the game we saw a couple of weeks ago [Man City 2-2 Liverpool], that made your mouth water and you thought, I would love to see that as a season finale.

"I was on that side of things, I would have loved to have seen that game again. The standard of that game, but the character and the quality of this Real Madrid team will add to that and it will make for a great final."

Focus for the Blues now switches to the Premier League where they hold a one-point advantage over Jurgen Klopp's Reds. City host Newcastle United in Sunday's late game at the Etihad Stadium.
