Rio Ferdinand explains what Anthony Elanga has added to Manchester United attack

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand singled out Anthony Elanga for praise after the youngster put in another excellent performance against Brentford on Wednesday night.

Elanga has been given a chance by interim manager Ralf Rangnick, starting the last two league games.

The Swedish forward followed up a strong performance against Aston Villa on Saturday with a goal against the Bees on Wednesday, opening the scoring in a 3-1 win.

Elanga's regular runs in behind the Brentford defence, as well as his defensive work when United didn't have the ball, further strengthened Rangnick's decision to start and trust the 19-year-old.

Former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to keep Elanga with the United squad this season instead of letting him leave on loan and Ferdinand admitted he's been impressed.

"It’s nice to see someone like Elanga come in and do well," said Ferdinand on BT Sport. "Superstars all around him. He had loads and loads of clubs try to loan him because they’ve seen what he’s done in the teams, under-23s etc. The run there was phenomenal."

Ferdinand was particularly taken aback by Elanga's finish and explained how the movement throughout the first half led to the goal in the 55th minute.

"He makes the full-back have to be honest in the game because he’ll test you," added Ferdinand. "He’ll run in behind — that goal epitomised how he wants to play, running behind the full-backs, test him, make him have to defend and he asks questions of defenders and that’s what you want him to do."

Further goals from Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford capped off an excellent second half from United, with Ivan Toney scoring a consolation goal with five minutes remaining.
