Rio Ferdinand discloses the Manchester United icon who gets 'ripped' in WhatsApp group

Rio Ferdinand has revealed that Manchester United's Champions League-winning squad stay in contact through WhatsApp, with one member of that side a constant target of their jibes.

United lifted the European trophy for the third time in 2008 under Sir Alex Ferguson, beating Chelsea on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Moscow. Ferdinand and Co had pipped Avram Grant's men to the Premier League title that year and followed it up with European glory in dramatic circumstances.

Fifteen years on from their success, Ferdinand revealed the group still talk regularly. It's unclear exactly who and how many of the team are in the chat but the former centre back turned pundit named a few of the usual suspects from that trophy-winning team, with Patrice Evra the usual victim of the group's playful attacks and is often entering and leaving the chat.

Speaking on The Lateish Show with Mo Gilligan on Friday night, Ferdinand said: "You got like [Wayne] Rooney, [Patrice] Evra, [Darren] Fletcher, Nani… not [David] Beckham, he’s too old. Evra just comes in and out because he gets bullied in there.

"He gets ripped and all you see is, 'Patrice has left the group'. And then you get a text a couple of hours later, ‘Can you let me back in please, add me, add me'."

Evra and Ferdinand have a long-standing back-and-forth relationship and regularly engage in social media banter. The two played together for eight years on the left side of the United backline, winning five Premier League titles together.
