Rio Ferdinand delivers verdict on Jadon Sancho’s England snub: ‘He could probably feel disgruntled’

Jadon Sancho has reason to feel aggrieved for missing out on a place in the England squad for this month’s Nations League matches, according to Rio Ferdinand.

A pair of goals before the squad announcement had put the Manchester United winger back in the reckoning and he added another after missing out, netting past FC Sheriff in the Europa League.

Sancho insisted after the midweek win that he remains focused on working hard to prove himself to Gareth Southgate ahead of the World Cup, but ex-United star Ferdinand feels that the number of call-ups not playing regularly should have made him a candidate.

He told BT Sport: “Jadon Sancho will be one player who will probably look at that squad and think, ‘I've done what's expected of me as a winger in terms of output - numbers-wise this season - and I'm doing better in terms of numbers than other players, and I'm still not getting a look-in’.

“He could probably feel disgruntled. But I think that squad is a lot of what we would expect.”

Marcus Rashford is another United attacker who has experienced an upturn in form but, following an injury last week, he also missed out.

Southgate said: “There were certain players we wanted to keep involved this time, but that said it doesn’t mean that this is the end for some of the others who aren’t involved.

“Marcus Rashford, for example, has shown some encouraging signs recently. He is a player we know well so if he can perform at a high level in the next few weeks, he of course will be under consideration.”
