Rio Ferdinand can't resist poking fun at Man City with Manchester United prediction

Rio Ferdinand has joked that the best Manchester United team he ever played in would beat the current Manchester City side 3-1.

City took the ascendency in the Premier League title race on Wednesday as they destroyed their closest competitors Arsenal 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium. It was a magnificent performance from Pep Guardiola's side as Kevin De Bruyne bagged a brilliant brace while John Stones and Erling Haaland also got on the score sheet.

Arsenal are still top but the result means City are now just two points behind and have two games in hand on the flailing Gunners. The Blues are now 17 games unbeaten and have also made it through to the FA Cup final and Champions League semi-final.

While discussing the game on BT Sport ahead of United's trip to Tottenham on Thursday, Ferdinand was asked if the best United team he played in could beat this current City side. The former centre-back seemed as though he was about to admit defeat before turning the tables at the last moment.

"Tough," he said of the hypothetical question. "I think it would be a tough game, it’s hard because Pep’s teams are hard to play against, we were violated by his Barcelona teams so this team with the weapons that they have now in Haaland and the way Haaland and De Bruyne are connecting, it would be difficult.

"Difficult one - I think we’d win 3-1."
