Rio de Janeiro experienced its hottest day in over a decade as temperatures soared to 44 degrees Celsius (111 F) on Monday, prompting residents to seek relief by heading to the ocean to cool off. This record-breaking temperature surpassed the previous high of 43.8°C recorded in November 2023 since the city implemented a climate alert system more than 10 years ago.
In response to the extreme heat, city officials issued alerts for the upcoming days and established hydration stations to help residents stay cool. The public health system was also prepared to handle an anticipated rise in heat-related cases as a result of the scorching temperatures.

Despite the heatwave, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes decided against canceling the upcoming Carnival festivities, which are set to take place in the following weeks. However, he advised participants to take necessary precautions to ensure their well-being during the celebrations.
Concerns about heat-related incidents at public events in Brazil have been heightened following a tragic incident during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert in Rio in November 2023, where a fan lost their life due to the extreme heat.
