Rihanna had to use a toilet like a “train station bog” and pop royalty mingled with the cast of Babestation on the stairwells at Radio 1.
Scott Mills and Nick Grimshaw have opened up about the BBC station’s glory days.
Its HQ used to be in some fairly rundown digs, according to Scott, which had a single toilet.
Nick recalls: “ Rihanna would’ve had to use this horrible minging bog. It was just quite funny like a pop star in a pop star outfit, having to use a really gross communal toilet.”
Scott laughs: “The door handle would come off. You would have to get out through a window, which would then lead you on to like a New York stairwell outside, where they also did Babestation – sometimes they’d be out on the staircase.”
The ex-studios “inexplicably had a cage around them”, says Nick, who had to lead Britney Spears past the odd set-up. Scott reveals he found her napping in a smoking room.
He left Radio 1 last August, and he said some tributes were a bit much. He told Nick’s Dish podcast: “They put a picture of me in black and white with ‘1998-2022’. I’m not dead.”
Indeed not, he moved to Radio 2 where he says it’s nice not to have to call the songs he likes playing a “guilty pleasure”.
And there are more toilets.
