A HANDFUL of right-wing protesters have been escorted away by police in Glasgow as they were swarmed by counter-demonstrators chanting “Nazi scum off our streets”.
A couple of people from the Unionist group A Force For Good arrived in George Square in Glasgow this afternoon.
One of the protesters from the group was holding a placard saying “asylum frauds out” before they were quickly surrounded by counter-demonstrators who started chanting at the minority group.
According to reports online, there were only two demonstrators from A Force For Good.
The two Unionist demonstrators were quickly surrounded and escorted away from George Square by police officers as around 100 counter-protesters chanted “Nazi scum off our streets”.
Video posted on social media showed a number of flags saying “anti-fascism” were being waved in the crowds.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said there were no issues or arrests at the protest.
The news follows another huge turnout by anti-fascist protesters in Paisley on Friday evening to counter an advertised far-right demonstration in the town.
Around 300 protesters and trade unionists joined an anti-racist demonstration outside the Watermill Hotel in Paisley where asylum seekers and refugees are currently housed.
There were reports that a similar demonstration occurred outside the Cairn Hotel in Bathgate on the same evening. Stand Up To Racism had organised people to protest outside both hotels amid concerns that they could be targeted by far-right violence.
Police Scotland announced in a statement last week that it had stepped up patrols across the country in response to the violent riots in England and Northern Ireland.
In a statement, a spokesperson said: “We wish to reassure communities that there is no intelligence indicating similar incidents are likely in Scotland.”
