Sometimes applying for jobs can feel like a never-ending cycle of rejection. With the competitive job market and the constant stream of “Unfortunately, we have decided to go with another candidate” emails, it’s easy to feel downtrodden.
The good news is that Seek has just revealed the best (and worst) times to search for a job, according to your industry.

Here is all the important stuff from Seek’s Seasonality Report.
All the juicy Australian job data goss for 2025
When is the best time to apply for jobs in Australia?
According to Seek, August is the best time to apply for jobs in Australia. Why? Since 2016 it has the highest amount of jobs (more chance) and the lowest number of applicants (less competition).
If you’re wondering what’s so special about August, or Jobust as I’m now calling it, it’s because the good ol’ financial year has already started (July 1). This means that HR departments get their budgets replenished, so they have money to employ you.
May, AKA MayIhaveajobplease, also has a lot of jobs — but for the opposite reason. At the end of the financial year on June 30, employers make a mad dash to spend all of their hiring budget. That way, their budget isn’t cut by upper management next year. It’s the circle of lifeeeee.
Before you go selling this info to a pyramid scheme, this data varies between industries (duh).
When is the worst time to apply for jobs in Australia?
December and January are the worst time to apply for jobs in Australia. In Seek’s Seasonality Report, these jobs were found guilty of having the lowest number of jobs (count one) and the highest number of people applying (count two). Lock ’em up, boys.
Don’t call me a hater — think about all the times you’ve applied for jobs at the end of the year. That’s what I thought. It’s the season of employees being laid off and those who survived hanging on for dear life. Employers don’t have time to onboard new people what with the end-of-year rush and the massive workload waiting for them when they return from summer holidays.

Of course, retail and hospitality jobs are excluded here as there are a huge amount of Christmas casual positions being advertised in October. You can find retail jobs here and hospitality jobs here.

Okay, my fellow creatives, listen up. You’re in luck, as May has both the highest number of jobs for you guys AND the lowest amount of applications. So, if you see me applying for jobs in May, mind your business.
Don’t get disheartened when applying for jobs in December, as you’re competing with the most applications.
Education & Training Jobs

I never thought I’d educate the educators, but here we are (we appreciate all you do). You’ll want to apply for jobs at the end of the year, with the highest amount of jobs being advertised in November. September is also a great month, with the lowest amount of applicants.
However, January will have the most people applying — which makes sense at the start of the school term.
Healthcare Jobs

To our healthcare workers, here are the straight facts so you can get some well-deserved sleep. The highest number of jobs advertised is in August, and the lowest number of applications is also in August.
The highest amount of applicants is in January, so I’d take a holiday around then.
Tourism Jobs

Speaking of a holiday, you tourism folks can hook the healthcare workers up with a deal, right? You’ll want to peruse your next holiday (I mean work) in October, with the highest amount of jobs being advertised then. The lowest amount of applications are in September, (is there a party I don’t know about??).
One thing is for sure, the party isn’t in December with the amount of people applying.
Legal Jobs

Okie dokie legal, I hope you don’t fight me on these. Your highest likelihood of getting a job is in May and April, with the most jobs and least amount of applications.
May and April have the highest likelihood for nabbing a job, with the most jobs and the least amount of applications.
If it pleases the council, January has the most amount of legal workers applying (don’t you dare object).
Check out the rest of the jobs data here.
