A rifle was discovered under a couch that had been fly-tipped at a substation.
Just before 12pm on Tuesday (July 12), it was reported that a long-barrelled rifle was found by contractors at the substation on Townsend Lane, Clubmoor. The gun was identified as an Enfield 303 rifle by an armed response officer at the scene.
Detective Inspector John Mullen said: “Although the rifle was not loaded it still could have been used to cause fear and alarm in the area. This seizure means there is one less firearm out there capable of being used to threaten people in our communities and we are grateful to the person who found it and handed it in.

“I urge members of the public to be vigilant and look around your property to ensure that weapons have not been concealed there as criminals will conceal their weapons in the most unusual places. If you do find anything, don’t touch it but call 101 and we will take it from there.”
Merseyside Police recently held a firearms surrender for people to hand over any guns and ammunition to be disposed of in a responsible and safe way. As a result, the two-week campaign amassed 92 weapons handed in, of which 36 were working firearms, plus more than 800 live rounds of ammunition out of circulation.
People with information about the use or storage of weapons are urged to contact Merseyside Police on Twitter: @MerPolCC. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers on Twitter or on 0800 555 111
