Ridvan Yilmaz fired Rangers transfer warning as he's told Ibrox switch is 12 months too soon

Ridvan Yilmaz was warned that he should have stayed at Besiktas for another year rather than take the move to Rangers.

The left-back left his native Turkey for a crack at Champions League and Premiership football at Ibrox but has not played regularly since the switch, featuring just three times during Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men beginning the season in the midst of a hectic schedule.

Besiktas sporting director Ceyhun Kazanci says he told his former left-back that it was a year too soon for him to take a step like Rangers and another year of development at home would have been of benefit. He told Haber Turk: "We said it was too early for Ridvan Yilmaz, Serdar Saatçı and Emirhan İlkhan to go to Europe. I think they could have stayed another year. We allow players to go if they already have dreams. Hopefully they will be very successful in the end."

Rangers signed him for a fee which could rise to £5m as part of their summer signing spree, but he hasn't been able to dislodge Borna Barisic.

His last start came in the Premier Sports Cup last 16 against League One side Queen of the South, appearing once in the Premiership and Champions League qualifying.

Next up for van Bronckhorst's team is Hearts at Tynecastle, where they can go top of the league with victory ahead of Celtic playing Motherwell.
