Ridley Scott’s epic historical drama The Last Duel has been tanking at the box office, despite the film receiving positive reviews from critics - and Scott has a bone to pick with millennials over its poor commercial performance.
During an episode of Marc Maron’s WTF podcast released on Monday (22nd), he and the Oscar-nominated director discussed the two big films of his being released this year, The Last Duel, which was released last month and House of Gucci , which is to be released in a matter of days (November 26th).
Despite The Last Duel including a star-studded cast of Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jodie Comer and Adam Driver and a budget of $100m, the film only made $27m worldwide when it was exclusively released in cinemas in late October.
Scott admitted his concern that 20th Century Fox would not promote the film, but he was not disappointed and told Maron: “Disney did a fantastic promotion job.” He added: “The bosses loved the movie. … I was concerned it was not for them.”
So, what (or who) exactly is to blame?
Well, the 83-year-old director had one demographic in mind, and certainly didn’t pull any punches as he berated millennials (and their cellphones).
“I think what it boils down to — what we’ve got today [are] the audiences who were brought up on these fucking cellphones. The millennian [sic] do not ever want to be taught anything unless you’re told it on a cellphone,” Scott said.

“This is a broad stroke, but I think we’re dealing with it right now with Facebook,” Scott added. “This is a misdirection that has happened where it’s given the wrong kind of confidence to this latest generation, I think.”
Of course, millennials themselves had plenty to say about Scott’s comments and took to Twitter (much to Scott’s disdain probably) to share their thoughts.
Many saw the funny side to getting the blame from Scott and joked about how they will watch his films on the cellphones rather than at the cinema.
Ridley Scott thought people were going to risk getting COVID-19 to see Matt Damon and Adam Driver pretend they are in the Renaissance fair. That's crazy. https://t.co/rbRoVPsGyh

Others thought that Scott was acting like a “peak boomer” and weren’t impressed with him blaming millennials.
I love Ridley Scott but blaming bad box office in the middle of a pandemic on "millenials" is peak boomer https://t.co/gyIMLNYjiw

I have seen Ridley Scott I enjoyed, and I've seen Ridley Scott that was meh, but the the Ridley Scott here has his head is up his own works ass to the point where he no longer understands audiences or demographics

Talking about Millenials like highschooolers is such a tantrum https://t.co/My49wNckJV

Apart from being completely incorrect, Ridley Scott blaming millennials is extremely reductionist and, more importantly, reeks of an old white man who can’t take any kind of criticism. A film flops? It can’t possibly be because it was bad! It must be the millennials’ fault! pic.twitter.com/dvVaLSp0jM

Ridley Scott says that his film bombed because millennials were raised on cell phones.

Somehow Ridley managed to make an even more stupid comment about millennials than that avocado toast thing. Amazing. https://t.co/HQMnHK8mzM
Ridley Scott blaming the failure of The Last Duel on cell phone-obsessed millennials is…definitely a take.

(Not a slam on the film, mind. Just….yeesh.) pic.twitter.com/G3pk4ppaz7
Some were confused with Scott accusing millennials of being the problem, and said that millennials are the last generation who are still interested in going to the cinema.
Another also pointed out that millennials one of the poorest generations, being worse off than their predecessors so many be can’t afford a trip to the cinema - especially if alternatives like streaming services are cheaper.

Ridley Scott blames millennials for the failure of his movie. Yet I guarantee you if that movie had been on HBO Max or Paramount+ or Disney+ day 1, Millennials would watch it. Most millennials are struggling financially! NOBODY wants to pay the movie theater tax anymore! pic.twitter.com/6VmBtGcVod

Though there were those out there who defended Scott’s comments and said an older person ranting about the younger generation is nothing new.
haha my fellow millennials putting out their outrage from their mobile phones about Ridley Scott’s comments is peak millennial. Get a grip, what he said is funny and kinda also true, plus he’s 83, he can say whatever the fuck he wants

Anyone that has a serious take on Ridley Scott, an 83 year old man and great filmmaker, talking shit about millennials is just being silly lol

Ridley Scott is 83 years old. Are we really so surprised he is, maybe, a little out of touch on millennials culture?
— Eric Drobile (@EricDrobile) November 23, 2021
83 year old Ridley Scott blaming his movie's failure on the confounded millennials is like the least worrisome thing he could say.
— Daniel Dockery 🔜 MAGFest (@dandock) November 22, 2021
Come on folks, Ridley Scott is an 83 year old dude who still makes good movies sometimes (hit and miss but there are some bangers for sure). He thinks Facebook is a new thing and millennials are the "kids these days". Leave him alone lol

As Scott’s film House of Gucci is to be released in a few days time, there are plenty of people who believed that most of those interested in the film are in fact millennials, but only time will tell...
Ridley Scott is going to look way out of touch when Millennials actually see House of Gucci because it has ad campaigns and Lady Gaga, 2 things that the Last Duel never had.
— Platitudes with Attitude (@Schright_d00t) November 22, 2021
The audience for House of Gucci will be 70% Millennials but go off, I guess https://t.co/lvDjla5y1w

millennials are about to make House of Gucci a huge hit, hope this helps https://t.co/AEtLlBrZWo
— Bobby Wagner (@bwags) November 22, 2021
Elsewhere, some people are more concerned that Scott doesn’t realise which age groups fall under the millennial generation as they are born between 1981-1996 (so are between the ages of 25-40), and highlighted that some of cast are millennials themselves.
Breaking: Ridley Scott thinks Millennials are at max 23 years old. https://t.co/5ms9uj73Ad

Ridley Scott blaming “Millennials” for The Last Duel flopping when Adam Driver and Jodie Comer are literally millennials themselves 🤨. I have other thoughts on why this movie didn’t do great but go off I guess.
— k 🦋 (@pennyanddyme) November 23, 2021
I'm sorry Ridley Scott is taking on an entire generation of grown ass adults and complaining about their attention spans? The YOUNGEST millennials have kids in kindergarten and the oldest are staring down menopause. https://t.co/8bDIOoBKtc

I've yet to see The Last Duel so I can't testify as to whether it's good or not, but mayhap, Ridley Scott, thou shouldn't blame "those darn millennials" for it bombing and treat said darn millennials like we're pesky teenagers because we're mostly in our 30s and 40s, dude.
— Casey! (@Muirin007) November 23, 2021
Does Ridley Scott know that most millennials are in their mid to late 30s now? We’re not teenagers anymore my dude https://t.co/Dm0Fd6sjKF
