RideLondon cyclist left with serious spinal injury after being hit by car in hit-and-run on closed road

A cyclist was left seriously injured after being hit by a car on a road which was closed for the RideLondon cycling event.

The rider was left with serious spinal injuries after being hit by the car in Ongar Road, in Fyfield, a village in Essex, at roughly 10.25am on Sunday May 26.

Police said a car, believed to be a silver Ford Focus, reportedly entered the closed-off road when the collision happened, and then left the scene.

The cyclist sustained four fractures to their vertebrae.

Detectives at Essex Police said: “We believe there will be a significant number of people who will have witnessed what happened and we need them to come forward.

“If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us.”

Anyone with footage or information is asked to contact Essex Police, quoting incident 369 of 26 May.

The event, one of the largest closed roads cycling events in Europe, saw thousands take to two wheels across London, Essex and parts of Hertfordshire over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend.

According to a road closure list circulated at the time of the event, Ongar Road would have been closed to traffic between 5am and 1pm.
