Ricky Gervais slams the Oscars for dishing out pricey gift bags and ignoring poor people

Ricky Gervais has condemned the Oscars for handing out pricey gift bags and ignoring poor people.

The 60-year old comedian, who has never hosted the Academy Awards but has presented the Golden Globes five times, responded to a fan who suggested it would be better if Ricky was hosting.

Sharing a clip of his opening monologue at the 2020 Golden Globes, which included jokes about Prince Andrew, Judi Dench and the movie Cats, they wrote: “RT if you wish @rickygervais was hosting the #Oscars tonight.”

Ricky was quick to respond to the tweet, and took aim at the Oscars and their incredibly expensive gift bags, which are handed out to the nominees, as he imagined what his opening monologue would sound like.

“I'd start with ‘Hello. I hope this show helps cheer up the ordinary people watching at home,” the After Life star and creator began.

“If you’re unemployed for example, take some comfort in the fact that even if you had a job, your salary probably wouldn't be as much as the goody bag all the actors have just been given’,” he fired.

Ricky continued with his jibe, as he then hit out at the Oscars for ignoring poor people with their lavish ceremony.

He said he would have addressed the poverty gap in his scathing monologue (PA)

“I'm proud to announce that this is the most diverse and progressive Oscars ever. Looking out I see people from all walks of life. Every demographic under the sun. Except poor people, obviously. F**k them,” he added.

He was applauded for his comments, and many of his fans pleaded with him to return to hosting.

“He should do every award show, their viewing figures would skyrocket,” one tweeted.

“I would actually watch it again if he hosted. I haven't watched it in years,” another added.

“If Ricky was hosting, I'd be on my couch, counting down. Love to see him at this award show. Would be EPIC!!!!!!!” one wrote.

This year’s Oscars goody bags are worth a whopping $140,000, and include an all-inclusive three night stay at Turin Castle in Scotland, worth $50,000.

There’s also a four-night stay at the Golden Door resort spa in San Diego, worth $15,600, and $12,000 worth of liposuction treatments, as well as cosmetic procedures including chemical peels worth $10,000.
