For a while there, Rickie Fowler was The Best Player to Have Never Won a Major in golf.
In the mid-2010s, he had come agonizingly close a bunch, with three runners-up and a T3 at the PGA Championship in 2014. The golfer who was also the best-dressed, an influential player who got a following thanks to his fashion choices and great sense of humor.
But in recent years, he’s struggled to make cuts. He dropped out of the top-100 golfers in the world and it all seemed to be over for him.
Suddenly, in 2022, he was back. A T2 at the Zozo Championship in October. In 2023, a T11 at Torrey Pines, a T10 at the Phoenix Open, and top-10s at the Charles Schwab and Memorial.
Thursday? He shot a 62 (!!!) at the U.S. Open (!!!), unthinkable for anyone at what’s supposed to be the hardest major out there, but he and Xander Schauffele did it.
It would be super-duper awesome to see Fowler win at Los Angeles Country Club. So many of us have rooted for him for so long, and to see him struggle was rough. Plus, dude reportedly turned down LIV Golf, for what that’s worth.
So good luck, Rickie.
