For the first time since 2018, Rick Grimes and Michonne will be back together onscreen. 'The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live' is now the seventh series in the zombie survival franchise overall and the third spinoff to feature main characters from the mothership show after 'The Walking Dead: Dead City' and 'The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.' The show was originally planned as a series of movies, which were announced as soon as Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln departed the main show in 2018.
According to key figures involved, the conversations around how to bring the two characters back together began as soon as they were separated. The original plan involved Lincoln starring in the first film solo, with Gurira making a cameo at the end to set up the remaining films. However, plans evolved over time, including working around Gurira's busy schedule due to her commitments to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
All three, including Lincoln, Gurira, and 'The Walking Dead' chief content officer Scott Gimple, remained in close contact over the years to develop what would become 'The Ones Who Live.' Gimple, Lincoln, and Gurira are all credited as co-creators of the new series.
To recreate the magic of the original show, the production team brought in several key members who had previously worked on 'The Walking Dead.' Lincoln highlighted the familial dynamic behind the scenes, with nearly a dozen department heads from the original show now part of 'The Ones Who Live.' The chemistry between Lincoln and Gurira, known as 'Richonne,' was also a significant factor in the show's development, with their natural connection dating back to Season 3 of the mothership show.
Despite the challenges of declining linear ratings and a fragmented TV audience, Gimple expressed confidence in the franchise's longevity. He emphasized Robert Kirkman's original vision of 'The Walking Dead' as a never-ending zombie movie and his commitment to continuing the story in new and classic ways.
'The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live' is set to premiere on AMC and AMC+ on Feb. 25, bringing back the beloved characters of Rick Grimes and Michonne for fans to enjoy once again.
