Rick Astley avoids booze to protect his voice but says he will need a stiff drink to help calm his nerves before his Glastonbury debut.
The pop singer, 57, revealed he will probably neck some Jägermeister before entertaining the crowd.
He described himself as “nervous” ahead of being the first act on the main stage today.
Rick said: “I don’t drink a lot when we are on tour because singing and drinking don’t really mix, but I’ll have a shot of Jäger before we perform.”
He added: “It’s become a ritual. If we get a night off where we have done a gig and we don’t have to sing the night after, I will definitely have a glass of wine then.”
Rick, whose first hit Never Gonna Give You Up topped the charts in the UK in 1987, added: “I feel really lucky that I have the opportunity to sing again and want to look after my voice. I know some people think drinking, playing and touring are all part of rock’n’roll.
“However, it’s one of the worst things you can do for your voice so I try and avoid it.”
The British star also said he regularly gets asked to sing Never Gonna Give You Up at weddings.
He added: “I did it last summer at someone’s wedding – I wasn’t expecting to.” He also admits he never expected to perform at the festival in Somerset. The singer, whose other hits include Whenever You Need Somebody and whose new album, Are We There Yet?, is due out this autumn, added: “I’ve been lucky.
“As a kid, I got a break into the biz and I did that for a few years when the going was good. I got out of it early enough to avoid damage.
“Everyone gets a little screwed up with it.” Rick, who married film producer Lene Bausager in 2003, added: “But I wasn’t left with any real problems. I met the right woman and we’ve had a good life.”
