Richie Towell hit with a three-match ban after Shamrock Rovers' red card appeal rejected

Richie Towell has been hit with a three-match suspension, after Shamrock Rovers’ appeal against his red card was rejected.

The midfielder was the first of three Hoops players to be sent off by referee Sean Grant during last Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Cork City at Turner’s Cross.

He was involved in a tangle with Leesiders defender Gordon Walker, which saw both players fall to the ground.

After consulting with his assistant, Grant showed a straight red to Towell.

Rovers quickly launched an appeal but failed to overturn the red card. There has yet to be a successful appeal in a process that has been introduced this season.

A statement released by the League of Ireland read: “An independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has rejected Shamrock Rovers FC’s appeal for wrongful dismissal following Richie Towell’s red card for violent conduct in Shamrock Rovers FC’s SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division fixture versus Cork City FC on 26 May 2023.

“In accordance with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Richie Towell will serve a three-match suspension.”
