Richarlison has stated that he has to show his value in a Tottenham shirt amid talk of a switch to Real Madrid. Signed in a £60million deal from Everton last summer, the Brazilian endured a nightmare debut season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a number of injuries disrupting his campaign.
Starring for his country at the 2022 World Cup, where he hit a fine double for Brazil in their tournament opener against Serbia, the goals unfortunately did not flow for him in north London. Scoring a vital brace in their Champions League clash against Marseille at the start of September, the attacker's only other goal came at the end of April after netting a late header in the 4-3 defeat against Liverpool.
Linked with a move to Real Madrid in the past, the 26-year-old was asked about a potential switch to the Santiago Bernabeu during a press conference while on international duty. Admitting that his "dream" is to wear a Real Madrid shirt, Tottenham's No.9 stressed that he has to show Spurs why he was brought to north London in the first price for a hefty transfer fee, which in turn will only benefit Ange Postecoglou if he rediscovers his top form.
"Look, of course every player wants to wear the shirt of Real Madrid, the biggest club in the world, but I have a club, a contract, I have to show why they bought me for a high price", he said, as reported by ESPN Brasil.
"This season went down also due to injuries at Tottenham, but it's a dream to wear the shirt of Real Madrid. But I have to show my value wearing the shirt of Tottenham."
It is perhaps no surprise to see Richarlison linked with a transfer to Real Madrid given he spent 18 months working under manager Carlo Ancelotti at Everton. With the Italian clearly a fan of the forward, the Spurs attacker has revealed that he still keeps in contact with his former boss.
"Well, as everyone knows, Ancelotti coached me at Everton and we chat a lot,” he said. “The other day, I called him and he was with Vinicius Junior and [Eder] Militao. But there’s nothing going on, just friendship.
"We became very good friends at Everton where I could help him. This friendship will last forever.”
