Richards, Niakhate, Biancone - update provided on injured Nottingham Forest trio

Nottingham Forest trio Omar Richards, Giulian Biancone and Moussa Niakhate are making progress in their recovery from injury.

Left-back Richards is yet to make his debut for the Reds, having suffered a hairline fracture of the leg in the summer. He is in Greece with his teammates for a winter camp before the resumption of the season, but hasn’t trained with the group.

Defender Niakhate has made just two appearances for Forest since joining from Mainz. He has been out of action with a hamstring problem since the 1-0 victory over West Ham United in August.

Biancone, meanwhile, has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign. He has undergone ACL surgery after an innocuous incident in training, and earlier this week posted footage on social media of himself taking his first unaided steps since going under the knife.

“Omar is out here, so he’s not far off. He hasn’t trained with the group yet; it will be another couple of weeks,” said head coach Steve Cooper ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Olympiacos.

“Giulian is a long-term injury, although I did see a nice video of him taking his first steps after surgery. He sent it to me, saying he wanted me to be one of the first to see it, which was nice.

“Moussa is further down the line. He’ll hopefully be getting close to the next stage of his rehab in the next few weeks.”

This week, the Reds have been hit by the news midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate faces an extended period of time on the sidelines. He is undergoing further scans to determine the extent of a hamstring injury he suffered while on duty with Senegal at the World Cup.

Forest return to competitive action with a Carabao Cup tie at Blackburn Rovers on December 21. They then head to Manchester United for the resumption of their league campaign six days later.
