Richard Madeley Opens Up About Grief Over Late Cat in Emotional GMB Moment

(Image: ITV)

Richard Madeley had viewers unexpectedly emotional on Monday morning’s Good Morning Britain as he opened up about the deep heartbreak of losing his beloved cat, TC. The usually outspoken TV presenter didn’t hold back during a segment about the way cats are treated under UK road laws — and many were surprised by just how raw and heartfelt his confession was.

Richard, 68, was hosting the ITV show alongside Ranvir Singh when they welcomed guest Kellie Watson, who is campaigning for stricter laws requiring drivers to report if they hit a cat. Under current rules, unlike dogs or livestock, there’s no legal obligation to do so — something Kellie is determined to change after tragically losing her 11-month-old kitten, Martha, reported the Mirror.

Moved by her story, Richard shared his own pain from years ago when he lost his cat TC to feline leukaemia. “He died after two years of cat leukaemia and it happened very quickly — he died in like three days,” he recalled. “And it took me ages to get over it and I’m not ashamed to admit it!”

Ranvir noted how emotional Richard had become while discussing it earlier in the morning, and he admitted, “Yeah, because I remember TC as an individual. He was great company, very funny and played great games and all the rest of it — and I really missed him when he had gone!”

The honest admission caught some viewers off guard. One took to social media platform X and wrote: “Wait! It’s messing with my head?! Richard Madeley sticking up for cats? Telling a story about the bond with his cat TC, who died of leukaemia, how he mourned it for 6 months – WTF?! How can I slag him off after this?!?”

Kellie, still mourning the loss of little Martha, had earlier told the BBC: “She was only with us a short amount of time, but she was our baby.” She added she was baffled by how easily some drivers hit cats and leave them behind. “Why wouldn’t you do that with a dog? So why do that with cats?” she asked.

The segment sparked a broader conversation on how pets are valued and the grief they leave behind — and for once, even the usually sharp-tongued Richard left viewers quietly nodding in agreement.
