Richard Madeley misses chance to host rebooted UK version of popular US gameshow

Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley has missed out on the chance to host a revival of a popular US gameshow.

The presenter, 66, has been at the helm of a number of big shows during his 46-year TV career, including This Morning and chat show Richard & Judy alongside wife Judy Finnigan.

Since joining Good Morning Britain in 2017 as a relief presenter, he has impressed ITV bosses with his charisma and the broadcaster opted for him as they aimed to revive classic quiz show Jeopardy!

Richard was set to front the UK version of the popular US gameshow, where contestants are given answers and they must guess what the questions are. A pilot was made but ITV producers decided against taking the programme to a full series.

A TV insider told The Sun: "Richard had high hopes that he would have a huge hit with Jeopardy! and it could have really capped his 45-year career.

"But the pilot just didn’t work for some reason. Of course, not every format in the US can work for UK audiences but ITV wasn’t prepared to take the risk."

It is not the first time that Jeopardy!, which first aired in the United States in 1964 and spanned for 39 seasons, has been revived on these shores. The UK has had three different versions of the quiz show, with ITV having a run between 1990 and 1993.

The first one aired on Channel 4 between 1983 and 1984 while the last version was on Sky One from 1995 to 1996.

On Tuesday, Richard got into a heated clash with the General Secretary of the RMT Union, Mick Lynch, on Good Morning Britain.

The presenter, alongside Kate Garraway, discussed the train strikes over the Christmas and festive period with Lynch, who was live from the picket line.

Lynch explained the union's decision to strike over this time of year but Richard insisted that it is the wrong time.

The interview started off as normal but soon turned sour as Richard accused Mr Lynch and the union of "robbing" businesses of their festive income and causing travel chaos, particularly at this time of year.

"We're not targeting Christmas Richard," Mr Lynch insisted, "It's not Christmas yet. I don't know when your Christmas starts but mine starts on Christmas Eve. So we are striking at this time because we've got -."

Richard jumped in and called Mr Lynch "disingenuous" over his comments, adding repeatedly: "You're disingenuous, you're disingenuous." Mr Lynch went to speak to say it wasn't but Richard still continued to carry on as Mr Lynch said "if you could let me finish".

Mr Lynch tried to speak but Richard continually spoke over the General Secretary, who did say that the GMB host was just talking to himself before adding "Richard you're ranting now!". As the chat continued to get nowhere, Mr Lynch then told Richard: "Why don't you just interview yourself if you want to."
