Richard Madeley issues grovelling apology to Sam Smith after calling musician 'he' on GMB

Richard Madeley has issued a grovelling apology to musician Sam Smith on Good Morning Britain. The ITV presenter, appearing alongside co-host Susanna Reid, was leading a discussion on Sam Smith’s latest music video for I'm Not Here to Make Friends.

The singer caused a stir online with their new music video, dancing in corsets, suspenders and nipple tassels during the piece. However, as Richard introduced the show segment, he referred to the singer, who uses they/them pronouns, as "he".

After being cut off by Susanna, Richard apologised for the mistake, before a similar mishap happened later in the segment, when he did the same to a guest. Richard said: "I am so sorry. I will learn to do that."

Sam Smith revealed they were non-binary in 2019, asking people to use they/them pronouns when referring to them. Gloria, the artist's fourth album, was released this month and features collaborations with Kim Petras, Koffee, Jessie Reyez and Ed Sheeran.

They will be touring the album across the UK and Ireland in April, with dates in Sheffield, Dublin, London, Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester. In an interview with Apple Music 1, Sam said: "It’s been crazy to be in New York and LA, because I feel like I can dress and be myself more in these cities than I can at home.

"I went to the White House and having Joe Biden stand up and say all these things, talking about trans people and how he sees them, he sees us. I haven’t heard that in my own country from politicians."
