Richard Madeley corrected by Susanna Reid before saying he'll get 'sued' during Good Morning Britain debate

Susanna Reid has been praised by Good Morning Britain viewers after she stepped in to correct Richard Madeley twice as they fronted a debate on the show. The pair were back at the helm of the ITV news programme on Monday (January 30).

One of the latest conversations on the show saw Susanna and Richard discuss Sam Smith's new music video which has sparked a divide amongst its viewers. Sam has released a new video for their new single, I'm Not Here To Make Friends. It features the superstar singer arriving at a castle via helicopter before dancing provocatively in corsets, suspenders and nipple tassels.

The video, which coincided with the release of their new album Gloria on Friday (January 27), has been applauded by the Unholy hitmaker's fiercely loyal fans, however others have called for an age restrictions to be slapped on the video following its release.

For example, while some have expressed that, to them, the video is 'vulgar and hyper-sexualised', others have called the video empowering as a non-binary person is celebrating their body.

On GMB, Richard and Susanna were joined by journalist Alex Phillips and radio presenter Shivani Dave and asked if the video empowering or offensive. When telling viewers what they'd be discussing, Richard started to read out some of the things that happen in the video.

However, as they introduced the topic for discussion, Richard accidentally referred to the non-binary singer as 'he/him' rather than the I’m Not the Only One’s 'they/them' pronouns. Looking at the camera, she quickly said: "Remember Sam uses the pronouns, 'they,'" to which Richard corrected himself, saying: "'They', sorry."

He then stopped in his tracks before continuing to describe the video, claiming that he would be 'sued' if he carried on. "No, I can't read that bit out," he said. "I just can't. We'd get sued!"

But the TV presenter ended up making a mistake again by accidentally referring to their guest with the wrong pronouns. Susanna, again, had to step in and tell him: "Shivani identifies as they/them," to which he replied: "Oh I’m sorry I will learn to do that."

Viewers, meanwhile, flocked to social media to share their disappointment in the host and praise Susanna for stepping in. @brightpinkstar tweeted: "How hard is it get a pronoun right on a segment about NB people. #gmb Thank you @susannareid100 for being respectful."

Alex and Shivani joined Richard and Susanna to discuss the video on GMB (ITV)

@amoola_83 posted: "Richard butchering everyone’s pronounces this morning! #gmb." @reelofthe51st wrote: "Richard Madeley reading out the parts of Sam Smith's video that GMB couldn't show & then getting their pronouns wrong & being corrected by Susanna is pure Partridge #gmb #goodmorningbritain."

@Annewittycomb, however, shared: "#GMB GO ON@susannareid100 reminding Richard Madeley about Sam's pronouns! And good on Richard Madeley correcting them."

But following the show, Shivani also tweeted to clarify: "Been getting messages from people worried about Richard Madeley misgendering me on @GMB - I corrected him, he apologised and took it on board. A masterclass on how to do things if you mess up, we shared a thumbs up and I told him his hair looks great."
