Richard Madeley announces 'lengthy break' from Good Morning Britain

We've got very used to seeing him in the mornings but GMB host Richard Madeley has confirmed that he plans to take a "lengthy break" from the show this summer. The veteran TV presenter often gets people talking with his controversial comments on the ITV morning talk show and he's been filling in since the departure of Piers Morgan alongside long suffering co-host Susanna Reid from Monday through to Wednesday each week.

During an appearance on Sunday Brunch, Madeley announced to hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy that he will be away from Good Morning Britain in the coming months for which he gave the reason of a "short contract". Richard said: “Since Piers left, as you know, his chair has been a kind of rotating gig and all sorts of presenters have come in and done it. It is true that of late I’ve kind of risen to the top of that pile I suppose. But I don’t know for how long as I’m on quite a short contract.”

The presenter continued: “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’ve got quite a big break in the summer, I’m going to France and then I’ll be back quite a lot in the autumn. "But as for next year I have no idea and that’s fine for me. I’m not chasing it, you know. If they turn around and say ‘We’re relaunching the programme and thanks Richard for all the fish but we’re going to use so and so,’ that would be fine with me.”

Richard has filled in as host on GMB since Piers Morgan's dramatic exit from the show in March 2021. Piers stormed off the set following an argument with weather presenter Alex Beresford over his comments regarding the Duchess of Sussex.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and the ITV Hub
