Richard Foster leaves Partick Thistle weeks after confrontation with fan as Ian McCall praises 'hugely important' star

Partick Thistle have parted ways with veteran defender Richard Foster.

The former Rangers right-back is set to leave the club after two years upon the expiry of his Firhill contract, along with four others.

Steven Bell, Ciaran McKenna, Connor Murray and Stephen Hendrie will also exit. However, the club insist they remain in discussions with midfielder Robbie Crawford.

Five loan players will return to their parent clubs; they are Rangers trio Lewis Mayo, Andy Firth and Juan Alegria, St Mirren's Kyle McAllister and Alex Jakubiak of Dundee.

Foster's departure meanwhile comes less than two weeks after an uncomfortable altercation with a fan after their away defeat at Ayr United.

Foster was seen being held back by team-mates and later revealed he'd been provoked by comments about his wife - singer Amy MacDonald - and taunts of a sectarian nature.

The Jags faced a disappointing end to their season last week as Inverness took them out of the Premiership play-off equation.

Thistle boss Ian McCall was quick to put on record his thanks for the departing right-back.

He told the club website : “It’s never easy to tell any player that they’re leaving the club, but today was extra difficult. All of the players have played their part in our Championship season and reaching the Premiership play-offs.

“I must add that Richard Foster and Steven Bell have been hugely important figures, on and off the pitch, during this period.

“I thank them all and wish them all the very best for the future.”
