Richard Agar is heading to the NRL after securing a role with New Zealand Warriors. Agar, who resigned from his post as Leeds Rhinos head coach earlier this year, will work as an assistant coach to Andrew Webster, a known friend of Agar who will take on the role in 2023.
Agar has been out of a role since departing the Rhinos after almost three years in charge. Taking on the Bulls in 2019, he guided them to Challenge Cup success in 2020 followed by two consecutive play-off finishes. However, they endured a dismal start to the current campaign, resulting in his decision to leave.
But he will now join the Warriors in 2023 in what will be his second stint in the NRL. Agar worked at St George Illawarra Dragons in their recruitment and high performance department between 2017 and 2019.
“Richard has tremendous experience in top level coaching and will add huge value to our coaching team,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George. “He’ll provide terrific support for our new head coach Andrew Webster in his role alongside his fellow assistant coaches Stacey Jones and Justin Morgan.”
Webster, the brother of former Hull KR and Featherstone Rovers head coach James, has been widely tipped as a future NRL head coach. He will now get that opportunity with the Warriors, who sit 13 on the NRL ladder at present, ten points adrift of the play-offs.
