Rhys Patchell says he can't wait to get started after confirming he has signed a one-year deal with Super Rugby outfit the Highlanders.
The 22-times capped Wales No.10 joins the growing exodus from the Welsh game with his move.
The news was officially announced in New Zealand, with former Scarlets star Patchell saying: "I’m delighted to be joining the Highlanders for the upcoming Super Rugby season.
“The opportunity to head to Dunedin was too good to turn down. Having watched Super Rugby from afar, I’m excited for the 2024 season to begin. I look forward to getting started and contributing as much as I can on and off the field."
The four Welsh regions are having to cut their budgets amid the financial restraints for the game here. The Highlanders believe they have landed a quality performer who was in Warren Gatland's Wales Six Nations squad, albeit Patchell did not make the cut for the World Cup.
Patchell follows in the footsteps of England's Freddie Burns at the Highlanders in providing experience for their No.10 jersey next to promising young duo Cam Millar and Ajay Faleafaga.
Highlanders coach Clarke Dermody said: "It’s fantastic news that a player with the ability and experience of Rhys will be part of our young squad in 2024.
“We see Rhys helping Cam and Ajay next season adjust to Super Rugby and develop their games.
“I like his attacking mindset and skillset, which should align well with the way we want to play the game.
“He defends well, has a sound kicking game and his ability to cover full-back will be a real asset to us during the season.”
