Renowned singer-musician Rhiannon Giddens has joined the growing list of artists who have decided to cancel their appearances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The center has been facing turmoil since President Donald Trump ousted its leadership and assumed the role of chair of the board of trustees. This move by Trump is seen as part of his broader campaign against what he refers to as 'woke' culture.

Giddens, known for her diverse roots music performances and collaborations, made the announcement on social media that she would be moving her show scheduled for May 11, 2025, to The Anthem, a different venue in the capital. She cited the recent takeover of the Kennedy Center by the current administration as the reason for her decision, emphasizing that her show had been booked well before these changes took place.

Other notable figures such as actor Issa Rae, author Louise Penny, and rock band Low Cut Connie have also opted to cancel their planned events at the Kennedy Center. However, singer-songwriter Victoria Clark proceeded with her performance on February 15, making a statement by wearing a T-shirt that read 'ANTI TRUMP AF' while on stage.

The Kennedy Center, a prominent cultural institution supported by a combination of government funding and private donations, attracts millions of visitors annually. The complex, standing at 100 feet high, houses various performance spaces including a concert hall, opera house, and theater, as well as a lecture hall, meeting rooms, and the popular 'Millennium Stage' known for hosting free shows.

Traditionally, presidents have attended the honors ceremony at the Kennedy Center, even when faced with artists who hold differing political views. However, Trump's presidency marked a departure from this norm, leading to increased tensions within the institution.
