Rhasidat Adeleke 'grateful' for support after stunning record-breaking run

Rhasidat Adeleke took time to thank her team and fans for their support in the aftermath of her record-breaking gold medal performance at the NCAA Championships in Texas.

The Dubliner became the first Irish sprinter to win a gold medal in the prestigious collegiate tournament when she clocked a time of 49.20 in the 400m in Texas on Saturday.

Competing for the Texas Longhorns, the run represents yet another National Record for Adeleke, who so far this year has smashed her own personal best times at both 200m and 400m.

Victory on Saturday night is the highlight of what has already been a superb year for the track star, and after the race she took to social media to reveal that she is 'grateful' for all the support she has received.

"NCAA 400m champion!!! -National record, meet record! -4x100m champion & collegiate record! -Team title Thank you to everyone who helped me get here & to everyone who supports me, it doesn’t go unnoticed," Adeleke wrote on Twitter.

"Grateful to God for how far I’ve come."

Adeleke set a new meet record with her blistering race on Saturday and broke a National Record for a scarcely believable seventh time this year.

She had to beat old rival Britton Wilson to get the win, bursting past her over the final 100m to set a new National record.

Her win was the first gold medal won by an Irish athlete at the NCAA Championships since Mary Cullen 17 years ago, and at just 20 years of age, Adeleke is now in the top-20 for fastest 400m times in history.
