Review of Letterkenny Road site in Derry to get underway next month

A former travellers' site could be redeveloped into an area for social housing in Derry, an MLA has said.

Sinn Fein's Pádraig Delargy confirmed that a review of use for the Daisyfield Park location will get underway by the end of March.

It comes after £4.2million was announced for the transformation of the Daisyfield pitches in the same vicinity.

When completed, a new hub will offer a new home for local sports clubs like Ballymoor FC, Oakleaf ABC and the Over the Hill Snooker Club.

However, Mr Delargy said he had stressed the importance of the site along the Letterkenny Road as "the next piece of the jigsaw" in a meeting with the Chief Executive of the Housing Executive (H.E).

He said: “A number of weeks ago we wrote to the Housing Executive asking them to bring forward plans for the future of this site. We believe it cannot be left locked up with large concrete bollards at the gates indefinitely.

“It should be seen as another piece of the jigsaw for the regeneration of this area following the announcement in October of £4.2million for the Daisyfield Sports Hub.

“The process of appointing a contractor is now underway and the Council have said they hope to have that finished by August 2022 to allow work to begin.

“Alongside this project, we have campaigned with others for many years to see the redevelopment of the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium, the Showgrounds and the new play park."

“The Chief Executive of the H.E has now told us that by the end of March this year a review regarding the use of this site and others will take place and is expected to take six months to complete," he added.

“This site should be put to positive use for social housing or for community, education or health facilities. It’s vitally important that we all work proactively to address the local housing needs issue through the identification of potential sites for social housing or much-needed facilities.”
