Review: Grand Hotel in Malahide is the perfect base for a seaside getaway

For Dubliners yearning for a coastal escape for just a night or two within the county, Malahide is the perfect getaway this summer season.

And the pristine Grand Hotel is one of the best places to stay for a spot of seaside luxury. The sunshine skies have finally coloured our Dublin mornings but most people’s summer holidays are a way off.

A weekend or midweek getaway, while the sun’s out to the coastal north county village, could just make for the ideal tonic to break the month up. The array of bars and restaurants in the picture postcard village, are something to behold.

The Main Street is a pedestrianised zone, allowing for a civilised al fresco vibe that can’t be beaten. You might not be in Saint-Martin-de-Ré but it will certainly feel like you’re outside Ireland if the sun is out.

Malahide, without doubt, has to be one of the prettiest seaside locations in Ireland and indeed, Europe. Among the best pubs to visit is Gibneys, a traditional bar where four generations of the same family have served the local community since 1937.

The fact this pub has been central to the village gives an indication of the type of place this is. People just don’t want to leave if they’re lucky enough to live here.

Fowlers pub across the road is also a great venue with a more modern feel. And for a late drink, Gilbert and Wrights, also on the Main Street will cheer anyone with its eclectic music and vibrant crowd.

While Duffys bar at the top of the Main Street is relaxed and friendly, the type of bar that’s great for a quiet pint. The newest restaurant in the village is Townyard, a modern bistro that opened only seven months ago, is a popular spot, with its delicious plates and views across the picturesque Malahide Marina.

And another favourite is Siam Thai, with sumptuous dishes and outdoor seating in the summer, as well as seating also overlooking the Marina.

Kajal restaurant close by is a popular option for fans of delicious curry and cocktails. The eatery has a small outside area, with a cover for that eventuality that it may well rain. And McGoverns restaurant on the Main Street, serves one of the best steaks I’ve ever tasted.

Bon Appetit on St James Terrace is a little slice of heaven, with its a la carte menu and chilled atmosphere. And there are other restaurants to explore, all offering great food. While Malahide Castle and Gardens offers serenity and beauty to visitors, on 260 acres of parkland.

The majestic castle is 800 years old, with a rich history dominated by the Talbot family, who influenced the culture of the village for many years. There are daily tours around the castle and special events throughout the year. And a fairy trail will delight children, looking for a spot of magic.

This summer globally famous bands, Blur and Depeche Mode will perform to thousands of fans on the grounds. And this is one of the most exceptional locations to watch outdoor music in Ireland.

The Casino Model Railway Museum in the village is a hidden gem and will entertain locomotive lovers of all ages.

Walks on the beach by the marina are relaxing, with beautiful views. And ramblers can walk for miles to Portmarnock beach for a view out to the Irish Sea, with panoramic views of Malahide in the distance.

And when it’s time to put the feet up at the end of a busy day, Malahide Grand offers opulence with a down-to-earth twist. The interior is contemporary yet classic. Think grand country manor with historic paintings and beautifully decorated rooms.

If the budget can stretch to it, the spacious Executive Rooms are recommended for maximum comfort with queen size beds and the rooms with a marina view are incredible.

The hotel’s Coast restaurant serves delightful dishes and a varied wine list. I recently opted for a smoked salmon starter, a lamb main and a gorgeous chocolate desert and enjoyed every mouthful, especially with the view out onto the water.

While for those looking to jog or swim the meal off from the night before, will not be disappointed. The Arena Health and Fitness Club on the hotel grounds, is free to patrons. With an array of gym equipment, a pool, jacuzzi and sauna, any visitor will absolutely feel they’ve slipped into holiday mode. And for those really wanting to continue the vacation vibe, well, Dublin Airport is only a stone’s throw away.
