Review: Beautiful - The Carole King Musical at Nottingham Theatre Royal

The Carole King musical was unlike any other musical I have ever seen. The crowd was excited from the start waiting for the show to begin, and at first, I thought there was some last minute issues behind the scenes as cast members kept appearing and disappearing.

However, they were slowly setting the scene by going about their day, chatting, testing the instruments, allowing the audience to fall back to the 50s. I did have concerns about what looked to be a minimal set, but it was designed perfectly and allowed for seamless transitions between scenes thanks to quick cast work and clever lighting.

Molly-Grace Cutler gave a fantastic performance as Carol, she had control of the stage, maintained an impressive Brooklyn accent and sung every song beautifully. It was also impressive to observe how many cast members had multiple characters to play but managed the quick costume changes without a hitch.

There was a chance for all the cast members to show off their voices and dance moves throughout the plan, and the theatre really came alive with audience members stomping their feet and clapping their hands. It was a show for everyone and anyone, whether you know Carole King’s music or not, in my row there were people in their twenties grooving along and people in their eighties singing the hits they grew up with.

You couldn’t help but to smile throughout the show, it was light-hearted and full of comical moments. Whilst it was painful to watch Jerry drift away from Carole, it was worth it to see how she came back stronger and found herself an even more impressive life without him.

I’m still stunned over how many hit songs Carole helped create as a song writer, and it was bewildering to learn more about her story through this musical, which was almost bibliographical. It really was such a beautiful show.
