Revealed: Nottingham Forest beat Jose Mourinho in transfer battle

Nottingham Forest midfielder Remo Freuler has spoken about joining the Reds in the summer.

The 30-year-old joined Forest from Italian side Atalanta in the summer transfer window, one of 23 signings to arrive at the City Ground. He has made a good start to life in the Premier League, but has now spoken up about his decision to make the move.

“It wasn’t an easy decision," he told Corriere dello Sport, per Football Italia. "In Bergamo I was at home, I felt part of a family, I still have many friends at Atalanta and off the pitch.

“But after seven years I felt the need to change. I was born in 1992, I’m not a kid anymore, I believed the time was right.”

When asked whether Serie A is a less competitive than the Premier League, he said: “I don’t think so. Just look at the Champions League, three out of four teams qualified for the Round of 16. We still play at a high level in Italy. I made a well-considered choice, but perhaps others would have preferred other paths.”

Freuler - currently at the World Cup in Qatar with Switzerland - also revealed that Jose Mourinho's Roma tried to sign him this summer, but Forest won out in that particular battle. “Ah, it’s possible," he said when asked if any other clubs were interested.

"Roma? There are always market rumours. And maybe yes, with them there was something. But until you put pen to paper in football there is nothing concrete.”
