What’s new: A retired deputy general manager of Dongfeng Motor Group Co. Ltd. is under investigation for corruption, joining several others at the Chinese automaker who have been caught up in a campaign targeting state-owned companies.
Tong Dongcheng is suspected of “serious violations of (Communist Party) discipline and law,” a common euphemism for corruption, according to a statement published Friday by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the party’s top graft investigator.
Tong was last seen in public in mid-November, when he spoke at a conference marking the 20th anniversary of the founding of Dongfeng Motor’s joint venture with Japan’s Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. in Hubei province. In 2017, he retired from his longtime position as deputy general manager, among other roles.
The background: Tong was reportedly hauled late last month after Communist Party corruption investigators began a round of inspections focusing on state-owned firms.
Current and former executives from a number of Dongfeng Motor’s subsidiaries and holding companies have also come under investigation in recent months, according to the automaker’s internal discipline watchdog.
