Restaurant ordered to improve after one-star food hygiene rating

A restaurant in one Merseyside town has received one of the lowest hygiene ratings after its latest inspection.

The Nine Dragons restaurant in Aintree which serves a wide variety of popular Chinese dishes has been given a one-star rating by Sefton Council after its inspection on May 3. The full report for Nine Dragons which offers a £36 duck and £19 fillet stake, has not been made available yet.

Details released along with a one-star rating show inspectors felt 'major improvements' were needed in one key area. This was the 'management of food safety'.

This includes an assessment of systems and checks in place to ensure food is safe to eat, evidence that staff knows about food safety, and the food safety officer’s confidence that standards will be maintained in the future.

The ‘hygienic food handling’ of the restaurant was also assessed by inspectors which takes into account preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage. Inspectors deemed that 'improvement was necessary' in this area.

The cleanliness and condition of the restaurant building and facilities were also assessed with inspectors saying this area was generally satisfactory. This area includes cleanliness and condition issues such as layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities, and pest control to enable good food hygiene.

A spokesperson from Nine Dragons said: "Following Sefton Council’s visit to our premises, it was highlighted that our procedures with regard to being able to offer a nut and gluten free menu required improvement. We accepted these findings and immediately removed nut and gluten free options from our menus.

"We have requested a follow up visit from Sefton Council to ensure we fully comply to their standards- which we believe we do."
