An exclusive get-together of drivers who have not been involved in any road accidents during the past 10 years is on the cards. They will be honoured with safety awards and presented as road safety icons.
The Road Accident Action Forum (RAAF), an organisation that has been organising road safety campaigns for a decade, is behind the initiative. The main intention of the gathering is to create awareness among other drivers against rash driving and of the role of drivers in saving lives of passengers and pedestrians .
“We are planning to host the drivers’ meet in the first week of May after shortlisting eligible persons from all districts. On March 31, we will hold a meeting in Kozhikode to plan the event,” says K.M. Abdu, president, RAAF.
Those who have been active in road safety programmes and awareness activities will also be honoured. Eligible persons, including road safety volunteers and mediapersons who have highlighted road safety issues through their reports will be shortlisted by the end of next month.
In curriculum
RAAF functionaries say their proposal to include road safety norms in the school curriculum had been approved by the government with the formation of a special curriculum committee in the State. They say creative events planned by the organisation would be a stimulus for the government to realise it faster.
