People reacted with shock after a man was left fighting for his life following an assault in Bootle.
It happened in the early hours of today (Tuesday), near the Strand shopping centre. A police cordon was set up at the junction of Stanley Road and Strand Road, with forensics officers examining the scene. Blue tarpaulins covered three areas within the cordon.
Across the road and outside the shopping centre, another larger cordon was put in place outside the Burger King restaurant. The door was partially smashed and yellow forensic markers were placed along the ground.

As both cordons were in a busy area, many people were concerned to know what was going on. One woman said: "It's very worrying. We don't have assaults as a rule because we all know each other, and it's scary that something like this is happening. You see these gangs who accumulate outside fast food restaurants."
Police confirmed they had arrested a man after officers were called to a report of an assault on Stanley Road at around 1.15am today (Tuesday). A man was taken to hospital in a critical condition after reports that he was assaulted by a group of youths in the area.
A 26-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody. A scene remained in place on Stanley Road while officers continued their enquiries.
Detective Chief Inspector Ben Dyer said: "Although we have made a swift arrest following this incident, we are still in the early stages of an investigation into a serious assault which has left a man in a critical condition.
"If you were driving through Stanley Road early this morning and have dashcam footage of the incident or saw anything suspicious then please let us know. All information you hold could be vital to our enquiries."
