Residents reveal what it's really like living next door to Leeds Bradford Airport

Residents living next to Leeds Bradford Airport have revealed what it is really like being so close to all the hustle and bustle.

Some of those living in the village of Cookridge claim the loud noise of aeroplanes taking off and coming in to land is not only waking them up in the morning, but also keeping them up at night. Cookridge, which is close to Leeds Bradford Airport, has always been exposed to the noise but some people who live in the area are hoping the council takes some action.

Shazad Khan, who lives nearby, talked about what it is like living with the noise. He said: “I suppose since lockdown has ended, I am noticing it a bit more than I did in the years before, probably because of exposure to a couple of years without the noise so we kind of got used to that.

“But, they do seem to be arriving later into the night than they used to and setting off earlier in the morning.”

Mr Khan also said he was looking into installing some soundproofing in his house, as the current noise levels are sometimes waking him up early as the first flights take off at around 6am. He also pointed out he knew there was an airport in the area when he moved in, so while the problem is annoying, he accepted there would be noise.

Julia and her partner also raised the issue of soundproofing as many of the planes seem to be landing very late in the area. A look at the Leeds Bradford Airport departures and arrivals list on the night of Friday September 23 to Saturday September 24 shows five flights arriving at the airport between 1am and 6am.

Three flights are also taking off at 6am on Saturday morning. The pair said they believe the council should step in with sound proofing for nearby houses, but when plans to extend Leeds Bradford Airport were cancelled there were no proposals for a scheme like this.

Julia’s partner said: “We would prefer to have less noise and less disruption at unsociable hours but if you do some work to insulate properties then of course that would take the problem away so wouldn’t then be a problem for us at all.”

Another man who lives in Cookridge said he was just hoping the problem got better as it begins to move into autumn and winter. However, many other people said the noise did not really bother them at all.

David Ursell, said he had lived in the area for decades and the noise did not cause any real problems. He said: “It doesn’t bother me one bit, I occasionally hear them at night but I’ve lived here for 40 years at this location and they go right past the house.

“I’m not really that concerned about it.” Mr Ursell added: “If they were taking off during the night then it’d be an entirely different matter because they’d be on full thrust and the noise levels would be greater but because they’re landing they’re on fairly low power.”
