Residents raise the alarm after man spotted trying handles of parked cars

A man has been jailed after residents spotted him trying the handles of parked cars in Stapleford. James Doran, 33, of Great Hoggett Drive in Chilwell, first came to the attention of police after suspicious residents raised the alarm.

He was then stopped in the early hours of Monday (March 13) by police after he was reported trying the handles of parked cars on Portland Crescent in Stapleford. Doran was later spotted in Chilwell and was found to have a modified set of car keys, multi-tool and additional silver key tools in his possession.

Doran initially refused to answer any police questions, but later pleaded guilty to a charge of going equipped to steal. Doran was jailed for 30 weeks after appearing at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Tuesday (March 14).

The sentence was partly as a result of him breaching a previous suspended sentence. Sergeant Al Roper, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Vehicle crime is upsetting and expensive for victims and something we take extremely seriously. I hope this case serves as a warning to not only to other offenders, but also to drivers to ensure their vehicles are left secure at all times."
