Residents 'petrified' after alleged fire attack on centre housing 50 refugees in Donegal

The proprietors of a property providing emergency accommodation for refugees in Donegal have said residents have been left terrified after an alleged fire attack.

The incident took place at the Sailor's Rest accommodation in Buncrana where 50 refugees are currently being housed.

It's alleged that CCTV footage shows an individual throwing a burning object at the front of the building on Monday evening, May 15, Donegal Live reports.

Owners Christopher and Sharon Flanagan say a social media campaign has targeted their centre since it began accommodating refugees in March. One online threat said "burn the building" and the whole ordeal has left those sheltering there in fear.

Christopher Flanagan has been reported as saying the object thrown at the building, believed to be a firework, exploded on the roof, a matter of metres away from the window of a room where a mother and her three kids are staying.

Sharon Flanagan said this family is now "petrified" of future attacks and is confident the person responsible for throwing the firework will be caught by gardaí.

In a statement to the Irish Mirror, a Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are making enquiries into reports of fireworks set off in the Buncrana area of Co. Donegal at approximately 11pm on Monday night, 15th May 2023. No injuries were reported or damage to property. Enquiries ongoing."
