Residents open up on life in the shadow of 'beautiful' Nottingham Castle

Despite the noisy gun shows, residents say they love living in the shadow of Nottingham Castle. Although one side of the "beautiful" castle is surrounded by tourist spots, including the beloved Robin Hood statue and street of cafes leading to the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, there is a whole other side to the castle, full of homes.

Nottingham resident, Andrew Crowhurst, 56, said: "You can see it [the castle] from our house which is very good, especially when there's fire work displays and things like that." When asked if there was any problems with tourists, Andres said: "No none at all."

Retired, Maureen Moffat, 73, said: "The guns on a Saturday morning are really noisy. We don't mind the events as it's always nice to have something, but those guns do make the floor move."

She added: "The gardens used to be gorgeous and now they are just shrubland. It's nice to say you live opposite the castle and of course the traffic is regulated."

Nottingham Trent student, Oliver Hudson, 22, said: "It's a nice quiet area and the restaurants up the street are really nice. The only negative side is it's quite far from the uni, it's like a 25 minute walk.

When asked if he was still in awe of the castle, Oliver added: "I've got used to it but the first few times I was walking to uni it was kind of nice, it's nice scenery." Fellow Nottingham Trent student, Bart Dziechciarz, 19, also lives just below the castle. He said: "It's a nice visual to see."

Pharmacist Tiff Feather, 28 and web developer, Kenneth Swizztzowski, 31, also enjoy living so close to the castle. Kenneth said: "I mean it doesn't have much of an effect on us but living in the park is very nice. It's a very nice area, the castle doesn't really come into it.

Tiff added: "For us every now and then we can hear gun shows and that's about it. It is fun seeing all the events they have on. It's funny seeing them all excited about the post box on the top end."

Another resident in the area said that after 20 years the novelty of living near the castle has worn off. He said: "It doesn't affect me particularly as I know what the castle is."

When asked if he has problems with tourists he added: "No they normally stay there and then go down to the pub at the bottom."

Tom Johnson, 27, lives directly below the castle on Peveril drive, which he said is "pretty cool." Tom says he is lucky that his house remains shaded by the castle over summer as it stays cool, and he doesn’t have any problems parking even with tourists as there’s a car park nearby.

Atia Keran, 31 also doesn't live near the castle but enjoys regularly visiting. She said “It’s a beautiful place, perfect to take the children. My two children like seeing the castle as it is somewhere a bit different to visit."
