Occupants escape through sunroof after car plunges into swimming pool, police say

An escape through a sunroof has saved the occupants of a car that crashed into a swimming pool on New Year's Day.

A Ford Falcon sedan took down two fences and plunged into a swimming pool in the holiday town of Inverloch, Victoria, at about 1:40am on Sunday.

Police believe there were two occupants of the car, which was reported stolen after the incident.

Inverloch police sergeant Adrian Condron said the occupants of the car were lucky to escape.

“It would have been difficult to open the doors because the car was a snug fit," he said.

“The occupants managed to get themselves out of the car through a sunroof, they've then decamped out the back yard of a neighbouring address.”

Next-door neighbour Jeff Hitchins had two fences destroyed in the accident.

"Neighbours ran to the scene and were worried people were trapped in the car," Mr Hitchins said.

“It’s hard to believe, really, the car just fits in the pool; there would have been no hope of getting out once it sank.

"It looks like they got out the sunroof, otherwise they would have been trapped in there.

"It's really amazing everyone could get out."

The car was removed by excavator over 24 hours later after a failed attempt by a tow truck.

Sergeant Condron said the investigation was ongoing.
