Residents in Newcastle city centre tower block left without water for over 48 hours

Residents in a Newcastle city centre tower block have been left without running water for over 48 hours.

The 165 apartment block, 55 Degrees North, on Pilgrim Street, has been without running water since Saturday morning. One resident said a number of their neighbours have had to move into hotels due to the ongoing issue.

And now they are also considering moving out of their property as they claim there has been no information about when the issue can be resolved.

The resident, who asked not to be named, said the water started going off intermittently last week but stopped working completely on Saturday. They added: "The water is still off and it's getting to a point now where I won't be able to live there anymore, I'll have to find somewhere else if nothing is done soon.

"We're not living in the third world, we expect one of the biggest apartment blocks in Newcastle city centre to have running water. There's people with medical issues living here too and there's been no help offered and no information given out.", they said.

Northumbrian Water attended 55 Degrees North last week, however following investigations, the company concluded that there is no issue with the water supply to the building and the problem lies within the building itself. Due to this, responsibility for maintenance of the water network lies with the owner or manager of the property.

A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water said: "Our team visited the site last week and carried out checks which confirmed there was no problem with our network in the area, or to our connections that supply the block. We have confirmed this to the facilities management company that acts on behalf of the owner."

The resident claimed that residents have tried to contact the building's director but have been unable to speak to them about the issue.

The resident added: "There's a big concern about what would happen in an emergency.

"The council are now supporting residents because it is a big issue. I think they've offered to bring in water tankers and toilets to bring into the carpark area if nothing gets done."

A Newcastle City Council spokesperson said: "We are aware of a water supply issue affecting private tenants at 55 Degrees North.

"Environmental Protection officers from the council have been supporting residents with welfare needs during this time, and supplying bottled drinking water where required. We will continue to monitor the situation and support affected tenants where possible, and are working with management at the building to improve resilience arrangements."

The building's director declined to comment.
