Residents' fury over Greater Manchester street being used as a public toilet

Residents have complained about a street in Tyldesley being used as a public toilet by passers-by and motorists.

One disgruntled resident posted on Facebook that she had spotted two lads pull up on Alexander Street in the town, and one get out of the car to urinate up the fence. She said she had managed to catch the act on camera with the registration plate of the vehicle and intended to report the matter to the police.

The post prompted a number of angry responses with one user saying it may be down to a lack of facilities and suggesting the council should be involved. Others expressed their disgust at a lack of respect for other people.

The resident, Marie Gungor, posted on Facebook: "Why do people use Alexander Street as a public toilet, 2 lads pulled up last night at 10.50 in a white fiesta one got out and chose to pee up the fence, we have got this on camera with the registration number and will be reporting this" They added: "Almost every morning the footpath is full of it, really unfair when people and children have to use the path."

Poster Stephen Budgen suggested involving the council may help. He said: "Maybe because there’s no public toilets open, and if the toilets where open they would be vandalised, This is a matter for your local MP."

Facebook user Thomas Mike Norris posted: "It happens on streets everywhere. Long gone are the open toilets that existed. The last one in Tyldesley was on Castle St and the council demolished it years ago." While user Gordon Richard Morris argued: "This isn't about the lack of public toilets, it's about self pride and respect for others."

A spokesperson for GMP said she had spoken with the PCSO who covers the area and she had not been made aware of this issue by any members of the community. She said the Tyldesley team would conduct a patrol of the area.

Wigan Council were approached for comment.
