Residents Flee Mezzeh As Rebel Forces Advance Near Damascus

Palestinians flee Jabalia after the Israeli military called on residents to evacuate, in Gaza

Residents of the upscale Mezzeh neighborhood, located near the Syrian capital Damascus, were seen fleeing on Saturday as rebel forces advanced through regime-held areas. The exodus was captured in a video that showed car headlights illuminating a highway leading out of Mezzeh, with groups of men carrying their belongings as they walked along the road at dusk.

Some of the pedestrians, notably wearing camouflage pants, appeared to be members of the Syrian military. Mezzeh is situated approximately 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the Syrian presidential palace. A voice off-camera mentioned, 'The army (regime) is withdrawing. The whole army withdrew.'

A spokesperson for Syria’s rebel coalition, a diverse alliance of factions united in their aim to overthrow the Assad regime, stated that fighters were attempting to encircle the capital. Meanwhile, Assad’s military dismissed reports of government troops pulling out from the Damascus region.

The situation in Mezzeh underscores the ongoing conflict in Syria, where opposing forces continue to clash for control. The sight of residents fleeing their homes highlights the impact of the conflict on civilians, who are often caught in the crossfire of the warring factions.

The unfolding events in Mezzeh serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the challenges faced by those living in conflict zones. The displacement of residents, including military personnel, reflects the fluid and volatile nature of the conflict in Syria, where alliances and control of territory can change rapidly.

With the situation in Mezzeh evolving rapidly, the fate of the neighborhood and its residents remains uncertain. The conflict in Syria continues to be a complex and multifaceted crisis, with far-reaching consequences for the country and the wider region.
