Teams of firefighters battled a major blaze at the former Co-Operative Funeralcare in Redfield on Sunday evening (4 June 2023). Police confirmed that some residents were evacuated from streets in the area, with some roads being cordoned off.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: A small number of residents in Church Road and adjoining Heber Street have been evacuated as a precaution. Others are asked to stay inside with doors and windows closed.”
The police confirmed that A420 Church Road had been closed due to the fire. Avon Fire and Rescue teams were on the scene shortly after the fire broke out in the early evening, but there was no confirmation of any fatalities or injuries due to the blaze.

Many residents took to the nearby streets to watch heavy plumes of smoke which billowed towards the city. Flames could be spotted coming from the old building with news of the fire being shared widely on social media.
Last year an unnamed developer had published plans for up to 250 flats in Church Road and had sought planning permission from Bristol City Council for the former funeral home site on the corner of Church Road and Brook Street. The layout and scale of the project was still to be finalised at that time.
The building was being looked at by Historic England and any demolition or alteration is illegal.
